In his radio program ‘Mann ki Baat‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Republic Day lauded the Bru refugee agreement as the best example of ‘cooperative federalism’.
“With this agreement, the community will be able to lead a respectful and dignified life,” the Prime Minister said.
According to the agreement, signed on January 17, 2020, Tripura must rehabilitate the 34,000-strong group that fled Mizoram and was living in camps in Tripura.
While the government of Tripura will provide 1,200 sq ft free plots and ration for two years, the Center has extended Rs 600 crore assistance for the refugees.
We will also get Rs 5,000 pension and Rs 1.5 lakh as a home-building aid.
During the signing of the agreement the chief ministers of Tripura and Mizoram were present.
The agreement paved the way for the Bru Reang tribe, who had been displaced from Mizoram because of caste violence in 1997, to be resettled.
