The ‘Special Handloom Expo 2019-20 organised by the Assam Apex Weavers and Artisans Cooperative Federation Ltd (ARTFED) began at Jonai HSS playground in Dhmaji from Wednesday.
The exhibition, sponsored by the Union Ministry of Textile's Development Commissioner for Handloom, aims at promoting the marketing of Indian hand-woven textile products and encouraging rural weavers to embrace trade as a way of living.
As part of its National Handloom Development Program (NHDP), ARTFED is organizing the show.
ARTFED is also planning to hold these exhibitions in Biswanath and Dudhnoi.
Inaugurating the special event on Wednesday evening at the Jonai HSS playground, ARTFED vice-president Rupa Kaman urged rural weavers to take hand-loom activities as a major source of earnings.
She informed that the Assam government has taken steps to encourage rural weavers to take such activities for commercial purposes, observing the growing demand for handloom products.
Earlier on Wednesday, Kaman opened a' Yarn Bank' established at the Jonai Handloom & Textile office.
She asked the officials of Handloom & Textile to take care of the center and from time to time report its function to the authority.
