On Monday, the All Assam Students Union held a state-wide protest against the bill to amend citizenship. Supporters of AASU protested in several districts for about two hours. Samujjal Bhattacharyya, the chief advisor of AASU, alleged that the Center is trying to impose the law on the people of Assam and the northeast.
“We will not accept the bill. The Centre must not consider the northeast as a dumping ground for illegal immigrants. The bill is unconstitutional, illegal and anti-indigenous. We will not accept it under any circumstance.” – Bhattacharya said.
North East Students ' Organization is also expected to stage demonstrations near the northeastern states ' Raj Bhavans to protest the bill a fortnight later.
BJP had said that the bill will be updated in the upcoming winter session of Parliament after consultation with stakeholders. Home Minister Amit Shah met last month in Aizawal with Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and NGOs to allay fears about the bill.
