Thursday at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok, Sikkim United Cup 2019, an Inter-Church Football Tournament, was kicked off.
The tournament was declared open by the forest minister, Karma Loday Bhutia.
Sikkim Christian Sports Association (SCSA) is organizing the eighth edition of the Inter-Church Football Tournament on the theme of' Play for Glory.'
The inaugural match was played between the Agape Christian Fellowship, the Majhitar Fellowship, and the Bethlehem Fellowship, Gangtok, where the former won 5-2.
Agape Christian Fellowship's Bijendra Rai was named the Man of the Match.
Popular Christian singers and dance groups also witnessed the presentation of the inaugural function.
The tournament was attended by a total of 29 teams from all four districts of Sikkim and one team from Kalimpong and Darjeeling.
Since its establishment in 2012, the tournament is an annual Sikkim Christian Sports Association event.
Speaking to media people, SCCA Chief Coordinator, Suman Rai stated the tournament's main objective is to provide a larger platform and exposure to skilled and talented footballers in various corners of the country.
He told that the tournament was successful in revealing many talented footballers from different churches and now they've been playing for various professional clubs in and outside the country.
He said the tournament also aimed to further strengthen the bond between different churches and brotherhood between them.
The tournament gives to the winner the cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakhs and to runners-up Rs 50,000.
The tournament's final match is scheduled for November 30.
