Right after Chandrayan-2, ISRO now looks to solar mission Aditya-L1

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) now has its eyes on the Sun with solar mission Aditya-L1 in the pipeline. ISRO has planned to launch the mission during the first half of 2020.

Aditya-L1 is meant to observe the Sun’s corona. It will image and study the sun from the First Lagrange point also known as L1 Lagrange point.

The L1 point is 1.5 million kilometers away from the Earth. It is a point where the gravitational forces of the Earth and the Sun cancel out allowing the spacecraft to hover.

This will be India's first solar probe.

Chandrayaan-2 launched successfully by ISRO

It is a big day for India as Chandrayaan-2 was successfully launched from the Sriharikota space station in Andhra Pradesh at exactly 2:43 on July 22. The internet is delighted as personalities including Anand Mahindra, Sushma Swaraj and others revered in joy with the massive achievement.

Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) heavy-lift rocket - the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV-Mk III) - carried the 3,850 kg Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft, as it blasted off from the Sriharikota spaceport.

Twitter is filled with pride as netizens and celebrities congratulated ISRO for the massive feat. "I stand & salute our scientists. They are deservedly our new celebrities," industrialist Anand Mahindra tweeted while politician Sushma Swaraj "wished the mission a grand success."

Chandrayaan-2 is India's second lunar exploration mission after Chandrayaan-1.  Developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the mission was launched from Sriharikota Space Center on 22 July 2019 to the Moon by a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III). It includes a lunar orbiter, lander, and rover, all developed domestically. The main scientific objective is to map the location and abundance of lunar water.

Chandrayaan-2 consists of an orbiter, a lander, and a rover. The lander and the rover will land in a high plain between two craters, Manzinus C and Simpelius N, at a latitude of about 70° south. The wheeled rover will move on the lunar surface and will perform on-site chemical analysis. It can relay data to Earth through the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter and lander, which will fly on the same launch.

Launch of Chandrayaan-2 was originally scheduled for 14 July 2019 at 21:21 UTC (15 July 2019 2:51 IST) but was called off due to a technical snag noticed at around one hour before launch.[10][7] It was launched on 22 July 2019 14:43 IST (09:13 UTC) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

A successful landing would make India the fourth country to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, after the space agencies of the USSR, USA, and China. If successful, Chandrayaan-2 will be the second mission to soft-land near the lunar south pole region after the Chinese Chang'e 4 mission, which landed in that region on 3 January 2019, although Chandrayaan-2 will land at a latitude further south on the near side of the Moon.
