On Monday the Assam Assembly unanimously passed the Constitution (126th Amendment) Act, 2019, expanding quotas in the legislature to SC / STs by another 10 years.
A special one-day Assembly session was held to ratify the Act, which Parliament passed on December 11 last year.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, moving the legislation in the House, sought the help of all the legislators as he said the Bill would ensure the socio-economic uplift of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
They also addressed various schemes his government has implemented for the welfare of SC / ST students.
Opposition Leader in the Assembly, Congressional Debabrata Saikia, Bhaben Bharali of Asom Gana Parishad, Kamal Singh Narzary of the Bodo People's Front and Hafiz Bashir of the AIUDF spoke in support of the resolution.
