The Gauhati High Court directed the government of Assam to set up mines and mineral task force battalion to check for illegal mining that takes place in the state on Monday.
The order was issued on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), based on several complaints that illegal and unscientific mining is a threat to the ecology and environment of Dikhow River.
The members of the committee may comprise representatives from the water resource department, mines and mineral department, revenue and disaster management department, environment and forest department.
The court also directed the Assam government to set up a high-level committee to study and recommend measures for the preservation of the fragile ecosystem of the river.
