On Friday, at Wangkhei in Imphal, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh inaugurated the first Handloom and Handicrafts Mall.
Manipur Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation (MHHDC) Ltd will run the mall. On Friday, the chief minister also unveiled a Pillar of Crafts at Wangkhei.
In addition to the CM, Speaker of the Manipur Assembly Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Chairman Sorokhaibam Rajen of MHHDC Ltd. also attended Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi's inaugural meeting.
Chief Minister Biren Singh said on the occasion that the hand-held and hand-crafted sector contributes significantly to the overall growth of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME) businesses in the state.
The Manipur CM said 50 per cent of the MSME business is owned by women in the state against the national average of 30 pc as per a report of the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.
He said the state government is considering a plan to replace fabrics that are used to stitch school uniforms with the state's handloom goods.
This would increase the demand for handloom fabrics and thus generate more income for weavers, the CM said.
