Shillong is one of the most visited cities in the North-East and with its natural landscape and pleasant weather; Meghalaya is ideally placed to attract event-goers. Coupled with the warm hospitality, community pride, arts and culture, Meghalaya has much to offer in terms of festivals, events, and social activities.
Come October and Meghalaya sets into a festive mood with the Pujas marking the start of the autumn season. Cool temperate climate and pristine scenic landscape set the mood for a series of events and festivals in the state. One of the main festivals that mark the onset of the Autumn Season is the Shillong Autumn Festival that is held in the Water Sports Complex at the Orchid Lake Resort, Umiam.
The picturesque, panoramic setting of Umiam Lake surrounded by the lush and lofty Lumdiengiei Hills provides the most scenic backdrop for the Festival. A cultural and musical extravaganza, the festival was first held in 2005 as an initiative of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) in collaboration with the Meghalaya Tourism Department.
Over a period of 7 years, the Shillong Autumn Festival has become synonymous with the identity of Shillong City and became the highlight of every tourist visiting the state as it provided a platform to highlight the rich culture and way of life of the people of the region under one roof.
“Brand Meghalaya” was established through the Shillong Autumn Festival when it secured the Guinness Book of World Record in 2012 for the largest Guitar ensemble playing Bob Dylan’s song – “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.” The Shillong Autumn Festival is now a well-established Festival that has attracted numerous tourist inflows into the state and continues to maintain a high brand recall all over the country.
The highlights of the festival are Music and Entertainment combined with a host of other attractions like Cultural Dance Performances, Ethnic Fashion Shows, Traditional Food Stalls, Kids’ & Gen X Areas, Handicraft Stalls, Watersports and many more.
The Shillong Autumn Festival was relaunched in 2018 by a Shillong-based event company called Opus Productions whose aim was to build and establish the Festival as an annual attraction for tourists & locals alike. The 2018 Edition witnessed an audience attendance of 4k+ across the 2-day event.
“The focus of the Shillong Autumn Festival has always been family-oriented entertainment and the 2018 Edition was no different. Showcasing local musical talent from across the North-eastern region performing in an open stage with the Umiam Lake as the backdrop and an ambiance brimming with all forms of entertainment from food to games to shopping, the Shillong Autumn Festival 2018 was a big success,” said one of the organizers.
This year, the Shillong Autumn Festival supported by the Meghalaya Tourism Department to be held on 26th and 27th October is slated to be an even bigger event.
Focusing on music as the core theme, Shillong’s ‘most loved’ Festival will also feature a Music Contest called “The Rhythm of Meghalaya Contest” that will be held in the last week of October for discovering local musical talent. Seven Musical Pre-Events will be held across various venues in the city leading up to the main event that will feature renowned national & local artists as well as an international DJ.
Besides the regular attractions, the Shillong Autumn Festival 2019 will also provide camping facilities and fun-filled games & entertainment.
