Northeast News : Gaan Ngai Festival Begins in Northeast

Gaan Ngai, the largest annual post-harvest festival of Manipur, Assam and Nagaland's Zeliangrong group, began on Wednesday in the Zeliangrong-dominated areas of Manipur and other parts of the north-eastern region.

Manipur Minister of Forestry and Environment Thounaojam Shyamkumar Singh; Haobijam Chaoba Singh, Director of the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry; Advisor N Rajendro (Boi) of the Information Center for Hill Areas Manipur and main officials of Tingkao Ragawang Chapriak (TRC) attended one of the inaugural functions in the village of Ramji kabui in the district of Imphal West.

On the other hand, Minister of Revenue Karam Shyam accompanied by Lamlai MLA Ksh Biren and noted entrepreneur Thangjam Arun were present in addition to village elders in another opening ceremony of the week-long festival to be held in the Zeliangrong-inhabited areas, in Sawombung Kabui village in Imphal East district along the Imphal-Ukhrul road.

A holy fire is lit in a traditional way to purify the whole city, and various Zeliangrong groups ' vibrant dance sequences are the key highlights of the festival's opening day.
